Diet May Affect Acne After All

Conventional medical wisdom holds that hormones, not diet, are the main causes for the development of acne, particularly during the teenage years. However, some interesting evidence now suggests a possible link between acne and obesity driven by eating a high-glycemic load diet. A recent review published in August in the dermatology journal Cutis indicates that acne may be promoted by the same kind of diet that triggers insulin resistance, a condition that can develop when the normal amount of insulin secreted is not sufficient to move glucose into the cells, causing an increase in both insulin and blood sugar levels.

High insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia) affect the production of androgens (male hormones) and insulin growth factor 1, a hormone similar to insulin. Together these two changes can increase production of sebum, an oil secreted in skin that plays a key role in the development of acne. So far, no studies have shown a direct link between acne and obesity, but some dermatologists are recommending that patients avoid foods that rank high on the glycemic index as a possible means of helping control acne. The study also noted that dairy foods have been associated with acne.

Unveiling The Causes Of Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes or GDM is a type of diabetes that affects only pregnant women, typically during the second trimester of pregnancy. About 4 to 10 percent suffer from this condition, making it one of the most common concerns of expectant mothers. Gestational diabetes can indeed be hard to understand but to simply put it, it means that a person has unusually high levels of sugar in the blood, thus the term "high blood sugar".

One of two conditions occurs in gestational diabetes. Possibly, there isn't sufficient insulin in the blood or the body is not responding to insulin as necessary (also called "insulin resistance"). Insulin is a hormone that is vital in regulating carbohydrate (glucose) and fat metabolism in the body. It pushes the body to take up glucose (sugar) from the blood in order that the liver can store it as glycogen. Small amounts of insulin or insulin resistance both lead to the same thing – sugar is not taken up and thus accumulates in the blood.

It is also believed that certain pregnancy hormones place pregnant women at risk for developing such condition. Human Placental Lactogen, cortisol, estriol, and progesterone are pregnancy hormones that are thought to hinder insulin from doing its job. If the body becomes resistant to insulin, blood sugar levels rise. To compensate for such increase in the amount of glucose in the blood, the pancreas tries to produce more insulin. The pancreas has its limits though. If the pancreas cannot keep up with the increased demand for insulin, the sugar levels rise and gestational diabetes occurs.

Some other risk factors that can make women susceptible to GDM are: being overweight, family history of diabetes, previously giving birth to a big baby (usually 9 lbs or more in weight), having gestational diabetes with previous pregnancies and having too much amniotic fluid (termed as "polyhydramnios").

Most people may find it hard to understand the causes of gestational diabetes. But keep in mind that as a mother, you can always do something to counteract the causes of gestational diabetes. Proper diet, exercise and regular prenatal check-ups are just some of the things you can do to make sure that you and your baby will have a healthy, stress-free, and fun-filled journey together.

Traffic, Pollution and Heart Attacks

If you're at risk for a heart attack, sitting in heavy traffic and inhaling the fumes could help bring one on within hours. A large, recent study from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine suggests that the risk of heart attack rises and stays higher than normal for six hours after inhaling those noxious fumes from automotive exhaust. After that, the risk goes back to baseline. Commenting on the study, the director of the British Heart Foundation said that pollution possibly affects heart health by temporarily thickening the blood making it more likely to clot. The investigators analyzed data from more than 79,000 people in 15 areas of the UK who had heart attacks between 2003 and 2006. The research team also referenced the time of day that the heart attacks occurred, plus levels of traffic pollution (including carbon monoxide and ozone) at those times in different parts of the country, to reach their conclusion that the risk rises in the six hours after exposure to the fumes. Their recommendation: if you're at risk for heart attack, stay out of heavy traffic.

My take? We've known for some time that exposure to high levels of air pollution correlates with an increased rate of heart attacks, as well as stroke and deaths due to hospitalizations for heart disease, heart failure and lung problems. Earlier studies have also shown that air pollution is associated with atherosclerosis, the build-up of plaque along arterial walls. This study indicates there may be a more critical time-line to the increased risk. The advice to reduce your exposure to heavy traffic is a good one for many reasons, but it isn't something everyone can readily accomplish. To help lower your overall risk, don't smoke, control your blood pressure, get regular exercise and eat a low-glycemic diet.

Top Natural Ways to Increase Energy

Forget about energy drinks and coffee. It is possible to increase energy naturally, and have a healthy steady supply to get you through each day. By adjusting your personal eating, sleeping and exercise patterns, you can fight tiredness and boost your energy level fast and naturally. Read on and find out how.

1. Getting adequate sleep at night is key to staying energized throughout the day. Try to sleep at the same time everyday and aim to get at least 7 hours of quality sleep. Eliminate as much light and other distractions from your bedroom as possible in order to get the best quality sleep possible. Avoid napping during the day especially in the late afternoon.

2. Try to add at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise into your daily routine. Do it regularly but do not push yourself to the point of exhaustion. Exercise is an excellent metabolism booster. Not only will exercising regularly boost your energy during the day, it will also help you sleep better at night, provided you don't exercise up to 3 hours before bedtime.

3. Your body needs fuel to keep your energy levels up. The following are things to watch out for food in your diet.

• Drink more water.
Dehydration causes fatigue, so keep your body hydrated throughout the day.

• Cut down on caffeine.
Caffeine may give you that initial kick but overuse of it will lower blood sugar and consequently energy levels.

• Eat more protein.
Insufficient protein is a common reason for fatigue. Pack some almonds and nuts for a quick and convenient protein snack or have a hard-boiled egg for breakfast.

• Watch out for excess sugar.
Excess sugar causes fluctuating blood sugar levels, which can result in plummeting energy levels. Try to decrease all forms of refined sugars, including the "hidden sugars" in low-fat foods.

• Eat small and frequent meals.
Maintain a steady supply of nutrients to your body and increase your long-term energy levels. Incorporate proteins, wholegrains, high-fibre vegetables and nuts into your diet to keep blood sugar levels balanced.

5 Ways to Boost Your Energy Levels

Energy is essential in this sleep-deprived, high-speed, modern world. Here are 5 simple ways to recharge your batteries and increase productivity and energy levels. If your energy reserves are running low, consider implementing a few of these recommendations over the next few weeks and see how you feel:

1. Get a good night's sleep.
Getting the right amount of sleep at the right times is critical to staying energized during the day. Eliminate as much light as possible from your bedroom as light interferes with the body's circadian rhythm thereby interfering with sleep. Avoid napping during the day especially in the late afternoon.

2. Get your body moving – exercise.
Implement at least 20 minutes of cardio exercise at least 4 times a week. By expending energy on a regular basis, you actually boost your energy levels. Do it regularly but do not push yourself to the point of exhaustion.

3. Slow down and do less.
Evaluate your to-do lists and list down your priorities. Get rid of the less important items. Schedule leisure time for yourself. Stress from any source is an energy zapper, and will have an adverse impact on your general health.

4. Eat small but frequent meals.
By maintaining a steady supply of nutrients to your body, you increase your long-term energy levels. Incorporate proteins, wholegrains, high-fibre vegetables and nuts into your diet to maintain balanced blood sugar levels. Also, make sure your bigger meals are in the middle of the day rather than at night.

5. Cut out energy zappers from your diet.
Fluctuations in blood sugar can cause plummeting energy levels. Decrease or cut out refined sugars from your diet. Caffeine intake should also be limited to the mornings. Overuse of caffeine especially in the afternoons will lower energy levels after they give you an initial kick.

Taking The Myths Out Of Pudendal Nerve Entrapment Surgery

Imagine someone with chronic pelvic pain or genital pain so severe that sitting, having sex, or holding a job becomes impossible. Unable to maintain normal relationships, this person may lose hope and fall into despair because no one understands. Finally, the patient is given a diagnosis of pudendal neuralgia due to possible pudendal nerve entrapment (PNE) that may require surgery; but for patients with PNE, making a decision about pudendal nerve decompression surgery can be very confusing. While some physicians recognize the value of PNE surgery, it is not unusual for patients with PNE to be told that surgery will not help them and that they will have to learn to live with severe pelvic pain for the rest of their lives. Many patients who are considering PNE surgery have exhausted conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or nerve blocks, and are still living in serious debilitating pain. Hearing conflicting opinions from health care providers may leave a patient who has chronic genital pain wondering where to turn. More educational information is needed to dispel some of the myths related to surgical treatment of PNE.
Myth # 1

Surgery should not be considered an option for people with PNE because it is too risky and its efficacy has not been established.

There continues to be disagreement in the medical world as to whether surgery should be an option for patients with pudendal neuralgia. In some instances patients are worse after surgery, and in approximately one-third of patients, there is no improvement.(2) Naturally, these patients continue to seek medical treatment after surgery which may cause some health care providers to question the efficacy of PNE surgery. Some post-operative patients who have had ligaments cut during surgery have reported developing sacroiliac joint dysfunction, piriformis syndrome, levator ani muscle spasm, and coccyx pain after pudendal nerve surgery. Other patients have reported new problems such as penile/clitoral numbness or pain in areas they did not experience before.
Despite the risks, according to publications in peer reviewed literature and anecdotal evidence from numerous patients, surgery can often bring significant relief in a patient's pain levels, and many patients experience dramatic improvements that allow them to resume a normal life. The challenge for the diagnostician is to determine which patients are most likely to have a positive outcome, but to date (September 2011), there is no test proven to offer 100% accuracy.(3) History and physical examination remain important in the diagnosis. Traditionally, pudendal nerve blocks have been used as a tool to diagnose a possible entrapment,(4) but there are occasional reports of patients who have become permanently worse from pudendal nerve blocks. While still used by some physicians, the value of a pudendal nerve motor latency test (PNMLT) in the diagnosis of pudendal neuropathy has not been established.(5) Recently, a special type of 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has shown some promise in locating specific sites of entrapment. When a patient is deemed to be a possible surgery candidate based on the clinical exam, history, PNMLT, 3 Tesla MRI, and response to nerve blocks, the patient, in consultation with physicians, then faces the decision of which type of PNE surgery to choose.

Myth #2

There is a "best" approach or protocol for pudendal nerve decompression surgery.

The pudendal nerve lies deep in the pelvis, and accessing all sites of possible entrapment presents a challenge to the surgeon. There are five basic approaches to pudendal nerve decompression surgery, but there is no consensus in the medical community as to which approach is best because there are several possible sites of entrapment. The transgluteal approach is the most widely used approach to pudendal nerve decompression because it offers the surgeon the best visualization of the nerve at the most common sites of entrapment.

1. Perineal Approach

The first pudendal nerve decompression surgeries were recorded by Shafik in 1994(6) and were performed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) using a transperineal approach in which a para-anal incision was made and the inferior rectal branch of the pudendal nerve was followed to the pudendal (Alcock's) canal. A slit was made in the canal to release the pudendal nerve, and six of the seven patients had a subsequent improvement in erectile dysfunction. In a later publication,(7) Shafik reported success in the treatment of vulvodynia, using a similar surgical approach.

Since then, Beco(8) and de Bisschop(9) have published results of perineal surgery, and both have reported that a majority of patients have significant improvement in pain levels. With the perineal approach, a small incision is made in the perineum, and part of the nerve can be accessed without ligaments being severed, although access to the ligaments at the ischial spine, a common site of entrapment, is limited and requires a rectoscope.

2. Trans-Gluteal (TG) Approach

In 1998 Robert, et al(10) published on results of 150 transgluteal surgeries in which the pudendal nerve is accessed via an incision in the gluteal muscle and the sacrotuberous ligament. He reports that 45% were cured and an additional 22% improved. Robert describes several sites of entrapment along the course of the pudendal nerve including at the "ligamentous pinch" between the sacrotuberous and sacrospinous ligaments, at the piriformis muscle, the falciform process of the sacrotuberous ligament, or in the fascia of the obturator internus muscle at the Alcock's canal.

Robert's team published the results of a randomized controlled trial in 2005,(11) reporting that after one year, 70% of the surgical group were improved versus 13% of the non-surgical group.

Popeney, et al(12) published results of 58 cases of PNE surgery in 2008, reporting that in using the transgluteal approach as described by Robert, 60% of patients had greater than 50% improvement.

Based on Vleeming's research demonstrating the importance of the sacrotuberous (ST) ligament in stabilizing the sacroiliac joint,(13) some physicians who wish to preserve the integrity of the ST ligament to prevent possible post-operative pelvic instability offer a modified TG approach that spares the ST ligament or replaces it with cadaver tendon as described by Hibner.(14) Some surgeons make a vertical instead of a horizontal cut in the ligament and suture the ligament after the nerve is decompressed.

3. The Trans-Ischio-Rectal-Fossa (TIR) Approach

In the TIR approach as described by Bautrant in 2003,(15) a small (5 cm) incision is made in the posterior wall of the vagina in women or between the anus and scrotum in men. The sacrospinous ligament is accessed by dissection of the ischio-rectal trench and pushing aside the rectum. In most cases the sacrospinous ligament is sectioned to release the nerve between the ligaments at the ischial spine. With this approach, access to the sacrotuberous ligament is limited, requiring an endoscope. Bautrant reported that at 6 months, 66% were asymptomatic or satisfied with their improvement, and at one year this number increased to 86%.

4. The Laparoscopic Trans-Peritoneal Approach

Possover published results of using a laparoscopic approach for Alcock's canal decompression surgery and reports success in 15 out of 18 patients.(16) Using the laparoscopic approach as described by Possover allows neurolysis of the sacral plexus, focusing primarily on the proximal and medial portions of the pudendal nerve.

5. The Dorsal Nerve Approach

In 2005 Hubry, et al(17) described a possible site of entrapment distal to the urogenital diaphragm at the dorsal branch of the pudendal nerve. Recently, several surgeons have begun performing nerve release surgery on the dorsal nerve of the penis and clitoris, but as of September 2011, no results have been published on this approach.

Myth #3

PNE decompression surgery is like any other surgery. If you have not improved soon after surgery, the procedure should be considered a failure.

Unfortunately, it can take many months for nerves to heal, and autonomic, motor, and sensory function may never be complete.(18) During the recovery period, patients may require significant amounts of pain relief medication for an extended period of time while healing takes place. For unsuccessful surgeries, patients will require pain control for indefinite periods of time.

Considerations before Choosing PNE Surgery

It is easy to see why patients with pudendal neuralgia agonize over the decision as to whether to opt for pudendal nerve decompression surgery and which surgery approach to choose. Having spoken with hundreds of pudendal neuralgia patients, I believe there are two key considerations that must be remembered when deciding on PNE surgery.

1. Has the patient tried conservative therapies first (unsuccessfully), and has his or her illness taken away abilities to function, to enjoy life, and to have normal relationships?

2. Is the patient fully informed as to the advantages and disadvantages of each surgical approach, of the risks involved, and thereby mentally prepared for the possibility of an unsuccessful outcome?

Patients undergoing PNE surgery desperately need the non-critical support of family, friends, and health care providers. If the procedure is not successful, they don't need to hear "you should not have done that." They just need someone to give them hope and help them in their search for a way to silence the pain.

Eating Potatoes Can Help Lower Blood Pressure

Of course, the potatoes in question can't be French fries or chips or loaded with butter, cheese or all the other high calorie trimmings that sometimes come with spuds. But if you're partial to potatoes and enjoy eating them steamed or boiled, in moderation, they could be good for your blood pressure, even if you're already taking medication for hypertension. Researchers performing a small study (only 18 participants, mostly overweight or obese) at the University of Scranton reported the results of eating six to eight purple potatoes twice a day. After a month, average diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) among the study group dropped 4.3 percent while average systolic pressure (the top number) fell 3.5 percent. Researcher Joe Vinson, Ph.D., noted that plain potatoes are not particularly fattening (a single one contains about 110 calories), and they're loaded with beneficial phytonutrients, which may be responsible for the blood-pressure lowering effect seen in his study. In a statement he noted that earlier research showed that potatoes contain a substance similar to ACE inhibitors, a group of blood pressure drugs.

Want to Lose Belly Fat? Start Moving

The belly fat you can see may not flatter your figure, but it isn't as harmful to your health as hidden belly fat surrounding internal organs deep in the abdomen. That's the stuff that boosts the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some kinds of cancer. Now, researchers at Duke University Medical Center have shown that the best way to lose this dangerous fat is with aerobic exercise. The Duke team compared aerobic exercise, resistance training (exercising with weights) and a combination of the two during an eight-month study with 196 overweight adults ages 18 to 90. They found that aerobic exercise burned 67 percent more calories than resistance training. It also had beneficial effects on known risk factors for diabetes and heart disease, including elevated liver enzymes, fasting triglycerides and fasting insulin resistance (here, the normal amount of insulin secreted is not sufficient to move glucose into cells - thus cells are said to be "resistant" to insulin's action). No such positive changes were seen in the resistance training group. The aerobic exercise performed in the study was equivalent to jogging 12 miles per week at 80 percent of maximum heart rate.

7 Simple Suggestions For Dealing With Chronic Pain

Chronic pain affect most of the people some way or another. It cost a lot to cure it as well. Most common chronic pain is headaches and lower back pain. Chronic pain can be defined as persisting for more than six months. It can be caused by a specific injury or medical problem. The pain could occur with no apparent reason which puzzled prescribers and patients. It is important to bear in mind that chronic pain cannot be treated in one quick solution but needed an extensive personalized plan to manage.

It is important to be able to accept pain as part of your life that need to be addressed before combating it. These are what you can do to deal with chronic pain:

1. Keep yourself hydrated as dehydration can aggravate the symptoms of chronic conditions such as headaches and back pain.

2. Load your body with nutritious foods that can help combat pain and reduce fatigue. Examples are leafy greens, foods rich with omega3, asparagus, low sugar fruits and soy products.

3. Keep a positive outlook. Thinking positively will help to overcome blocks and lessen the pain you are feeling.

4. Distract yourself with activities that are not stressful such as yoga, listening to music, watching movies. It is good to engage in activities that make you feel good.

5. Maintain proper posture. Being in C-slump which is a bend back with head in front of spine can impair nerve and blood flow. Try to keep head in a parallel line with a straight spine. This can help prevent strain on back and neck muscles.

6. Discuss your pain. You may be able to find solutions to problems that cause you stress and any helpful coping skills.

7. Keep a diary that can help you keep track of your pain and record down medications that are able to help you and any adverse effects you experience while taking them. This can help you to be in more control of your pain.

Eating to Lower Cholesterol

If your cholesterol is on the high side, you may be able to help bring it down with a diet that includes nuts, whole soy foods and high fiber foods. The latter includes vegetables, and breads and cereals containing whole grains like oats and barley. A study published in the August 24/31 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that this "portfolio" diet yielded better cholesterol-lowering effects than the low fat diet that has been traditionally recommended to bring down high levels of LDL ("bad" cholesterol). Study participants on the portfolio diet lowered their LDL by more than 13 percent, compared to only a three percent reduction among participants who followed a low-fat diet. Essentially, on the "portfolio" diet, participants replaced sources of saturated fat such as red meat and dairy products with foods that provide healthy fats, namely nuts and soy products. The diet also calls for substituting plant sterol enriched margarine for butter.
My take? I've long recommended including nuts and whole soy based protein (instead of animal protein) in your diet if you're trying to lower your cholesterol. I also think it's a good idea to reduce the amount of sugar and flour in your diet when you're trying to bring down your cholesterol. Recent evidence indicates that added sugar - in the form of table sugar (sucrose) or high-fructose corn syrup - is probably a greater contributor to heart disease than is saturated fat. I disagree with the inclusion of margarine in the "portfolio" diet and discourage its use in general because the highly processed fats it contains promote inflammation, cancer and damage to the immune system. The monounsaturated fat found in olive oil and nuts is the healthiest fat of all and the type I recommend that you rely on the most, whether or not you're trying to lower your cholesterol.

Exercise for 15 Minutes: Live Longer

Here's more evidence that even a little bit of exercise can make a big difference to your health. Researchers in Taiwan followed more than 400,000 people for an average of eight years and found that 15 minutes of exercise daily can boost life expectancy by three years. Compared to inactive individuals, participants who exercised for just under 15 minutes per day were 14 percent less likely to die from any cause during the eight years of the study, and 10 percent less likely to die of cancer. Beyond that, each additional 15 minutes of daily exercise lowered the risk of death - from any cause - by four percent, and the extra physical activity cut the risk of death from cancer by one percent. Earlier this month, a review published online in Circulation showed that people who get 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week reduce their risk of heart disease by 14 percent compared to inactive people and that exercising five hours per week can lower heart disease risk by as much as 20 percent. The new study from Taiwan was published online on August 15 by The Lancet.

More Protein for Dieting Postmenopausal Women

If you're past menopause and want to lose weight by cutting calories, you'll likely lose muscle as well as fat, but adding protein to your diet can help offset the muscle loss. Another bonus to added protein: it helps cut down on hunger, according to University of Illinois researchers who followed two groups of healthy postmenopausal women for six months. All the women were following a 1,400 calorie a day weight-loss diet. One group of women received a powdered whey protein supplement twice a day; the other group received a placebo containing carbohydrates. Before and after the study, all the women were evaluated for strength, balance, the ability to walk 50 feet, stand up five times from a chair and lift a book 12 inches above shoulder height. After the study, the researchers found that all the participants' strength decreased as their weight fell, but that those whose diets included the supplemental protein lost 3.9 percent more weight and had a relative gain of 5.8 percent more thigh-muscle volume than those in the other group. The investigators noted that age and weight-related loss of muscle mass can affect strength, balance, and the ability to perform such everyday activities as climbing stairs and getting up from a chair.

Too Much TV May Shorten Life

In June of this year, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association demonstrated that watching two or more hours of television daily raises the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and now a report from Australia has calculated how many years a daily TV viewing habit can shave off life expectancy. Investigators from the University of Queensland suggest that every hour spent watching TV lowers life expectancy by nearly 22 minutes. The study team reviewed data on more than 11,000 individuals age 25 and older and found that sitting in front of the TV for an average of six hours a day may mean a loss of nearly five years of life and that watching six hours of television daily may shorten life even more than smoking and obesity. The researchers looked at data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle study and calculated their results based on the 9.8 billion hours of TV that participants watched in 2008, which would add up to the loss of 286,000 life years. The findings were published online August 15 by the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
My take? This report echoes earlier evidence that a TV habit can be unhealthy. In the past, my objections to watching a lot of television have focused on associated unhealthy behaviors: eating too much junk food or using television for stress management instead of utilizing more effective approaches, such as breath work and other relaxation techniques. Clearly, time spent watching television can eat into available time for daily exercise, which we all need for optimum health. The Australian researchers noted that the effects of watching television elsewhere in the world are likely to be comparable which they claim represents a public health problem on par with smoking, obesity and an inactive lifestyle.

Obesity May Not Be So Dangerous

New research from Canada suggests that being obese, by itself, may not be so bad - as long as you don't have weight-related medical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and heart disease. Investigators at the University of Alberta looked at data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and were able to identify obese individuals based on lifestyle factors and medical history. They devised a five stage system for classifying obese men and women assigning scores (on a scale of 0 to 4) based on the number of health problems an individual had, with higher scores indicating individuals that had developed more of these associated problems. Bottom line: those with scores of 2 or above were 1.5 times as likely to die during the nearly two decades of the study's follow-up as those with lower scores. Scores of 3 raised the risk to 2.5 times as likely to die as low-score patients. The system may give doctors a new way to identify obese patients who would benefit most from weight loss or medical treatment.

Guide to Acne Cure - How to Working With Your Doctor

Physicians are exceedingly busy individuals that are often overworked, underpaid and occasionally harassed by patients that have little to sound off about.

But I believe they genuinely wish to help their patients, and will take your acne condition earnestly. There are a number of elementary steps you may take to ensure you maximize the chance of getting the correct help from your physician in caring for your acne

A Better Experience
A central skill in getting the best out of any state of affairs is clear communication. Your physician may simply act on the information you give him about your condition.

Not supplying the 'full story' is the basic reason for misdiagnosis or a lack of pressing attention. Make certain you tell your physician, how long you've had the acne, what treatments you've attempted, where does the acne happen and is it worsened by reaction to stress of sunshine.

Ask questions about any prospect of your acne that you would like to clarify. A great tip is to write down the questions you wish to ask, before you speak to your physician, to assure you cover everything. Don't feel humiliated by asking particular questions, remember there are 'no dumb questions'

Comprehend that there are no miracle cures for acne, and that you might have to attempt a number of assorted treatments before you discover one, which is effective, against your certain type.

Make certain you mention the emotional side of how your acne makes you feel, if this is of certain concern to you. This is a vital area that's frequently omitted, and is clearly crucial particularly if your acne is resulting in depression, or resulting in a decrease in your social interactions with other people.

If your physician prescribes any medicine, make certain you fully understand

1) How to apply the treatment,
2) How long will it be before you discover any improvement,
3) Any side-effects that you might experience,
4) When do you have to return for a follow up, and
5) How long the treatment will last. These central questions will ensure you're fully informed about the treatment program you're embarking on.

Remember your physician is there to help you defeat both the physical and emotional side of acne. If you don't feel you may easily approach your physician, find an alternate medical professional, like a dermatologist. Whatsoever you decide to do, ensure you seek help, and don't let acne get the best of you.

Wine & Grapes May Protect Skin

A green wine grape.Image via Wikipedia

No joke: researchers in Spain have suggested that drinking red wine or eating grapes may help defend your skin against the damaging effects of sunburn. The investigators report that antioxidant compounds found in grapes can protect skin by undermining formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). If left unchecked, these byproducts of normal metabolism set off a chemical reaction that kills off cells and as a result, damages skin exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays. Researchers at the University of Barcelona and the Spanish National Research Council studied the chemical reaction that leads to sunburn and then looked at the effects of flavonoids on this process. They suggested that grapes could protect against both burns and skin cancer. Don't be too quick to trade your sunscreen for a bottle of Spanish red: the grapes may turn out to work best when incorporated into skin creams to guard us from sunburn. The study was published in the May 11, 2011 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

Psychological Treatments for Panic Attacks

The panic attack and disorder treatment is quite a lengthy process and does not complete in a few days time. Therefore, it is the prime duty of a therapist to make the patient as comfortable as he/she can from the very first day of the treatment. An irritated patient who has already suffered a lot because of the ailment could discontinue the treatment anytime and for this reason the therapist has to be really professional as well as friendly with the patient. Once this is done, the patient always tends to co-operate with the therapist which helps in running the treatment process smoothly with more success. There are different treatment plans for different patients, which means, that a treatment plan for patient A might not suit the patient B. therefore, the therapist has to be well aware of this situation and devise the treatment plan and pattern accordingly.

These factors lead to proper band successful treatment results wherein some patients develop the signs of improvement within 8 to 10 appointments or sessions with the therapist.

Patients should always select the therapist who is both renowned as well as experienced in the field as it is the therapist who plays a vital role in devising fruitful and result-oriented improvements in the patients.
